Eyelash Tint Aftercare: What to Do in the First 48 Hours

Serving Minnetonka, Wayzata, Hopkins, St Louis Park, Golden Valley, and Eden Prairie
Right after your eyelash tint, the single most important rule is simple: keep your lashes dry and product-free for the first 24 to 48 hours. I’m in the Ridgedale commercial district near Ridgedale Center in Minnetonka, and I tint a lot of lashes for people who want a low-maintenance boost that still looks polished on workdays, errands, and weekend plans. Give the pigment time to fully set, and you’ll usually get a deeper, more even result that lasts better.
The first 24 to 48 hours: the do-not-do list that actually protects your tint
If you only follow one part of eyelash tint aftercare, follow this part. During the first 24 to 48 hours, I generally recommend you treat your lashes like fresh color that needs time to settle.
For 24 to 48 hours: no water on lashes, no steam, no mascara or eye makeup, and no oil-based cleansers or makeup removers.
That means skipping face-first shower spray, long hot showers with lots of steam, saunas, and hot yoga style workouts that leave you dripping. If you need to shower, keep the water off your eye area and avoid letting shampoo run down over your lashes.
Also, hands off. No rubbing, no tugging at the lash line, and definitely no lash curler right away. Lashes can feel a little more noticeable right after tinting, and that’s when people accidentally over-touch them.
And yes, this matters in real life around Ridgedale and I-394. If you’re commuting, grabbing a quick workout, then heading to dinner, it’s tempting to wash up fast. I’d rather you do a gentle refresh and keep your lashes dry than “fully wash” and fade your tint on day one.
Days 3 to 7: sweat, sun, and lake water are usually the sneaky fade triggers
Once you’re past that initial 48-hour window, you can get back to normal routines, but a few habits will help your tint last longer. In Minnetonka, the biggest patterns I see are summer sun and water, and then winter dryness when indoor heat is running.
If you’re planning swimming, hot tubs, or a day on the lake, I recommend waiting the full 48 hours first. Chlorine and frequent soaking tend to fade lash tint faster, even after the “safe” window. After swimming, rinse your face with cool or lukewarm water and pat dry. Don’t scrub your eye area with a towel.
Try to keep sunscreen, tanning oils, and heavy face oils away from the lash line. Oils break down pigment more quickly than most people realize. If you use eye cream, use a tiny amount and keep it off the lashes.
In winter, lashes can feel drier or a little more brittle. That’s when rubbing tends to creep back in. If your eyes are itchy, use cool compresses and be gentle. I’d rather you soothe the area than scratch through your tint.
Simple eyelash tint care tips: cleanser choices and the 30-second routine
You don’t need a complicated routine to get good wear out of your tint. You need the right product types and a lighter touch.
My go-to routine (oil-free and gentle)
- Cleanse: Use an oil-free cleanser or oil-free micellar water around the eyes. Avoid oily makeup removers.
- Dry: Pat, don’t rub. A soft towel is fine, just keep friction low at the lash line.
- Comb: If lashes get crossed, use a clean spoolie and a light hand.
If you’re asking “can I shower after eyelash tint, ” the answer is yes, just not in a way that soaks your lashes during that first 24 to 48 hours. After that, normal showers are fine. Keep the water warm, not scalding, and don’t stand in heavy steam for a long time if you’re trying to stretch the life of your tint.
Mascara is optional after tinting. A lot of people love tint because it cuts down daily makeup time. If you do wear mascara later, pick something that removes cleanly without oils and don’t layer it heavily at the roots.
When to reach out (and when it’s just normal post-tint sensitivity)
Most people do great after a tint, but I still want you to know what’s normal and what’s not. Mild awareness around the eyes can happen right after the appointment. That usually settles quickly once you’re home and done touching the area.
If you notice redness, ongoing itching, swelling, or discomfort that doesn’t calm down, rinse with cool water and stop using any products around the eyes. Then reach out to me so I can talk it through with you. I’d rather you ask than try to push through irritation.

That’s the standard I stick to across everything I do here. Clear guidance, careful work, and real follow-through if something feels off.
If you’re planning your next appointment already, most people like a touch-up every 4 to 6 weeks, or sooner if you notice regrowth and want the base color refreshed. And if you’re comparing services, I put together a helpful breakdown of eyelash tint vs. lash lift so you can pick what fits your routine.
