Nervous About Your First Chin Wax? Prep, Pain & Aftercare
By Bay Salon & Boutique | October 27, 2026
Serving Minnetonka and the Ridgedale commercial district near I-394
I hear first-time nerves all the time, and honestly, that’s normal. The good news is that I’m used to taking great care of people. One of our clients described Steph as “a walking master class for hair and customer care, ” and that same attention to comfort and details is exactly how I approach facial waxing too. A first chin wax is fast, usually 5 to 10 minutes for the waxing itself, and it’s straightforward when you know how to prep, what the sting feels like, and how to care for your skin after.
How to prepare for a chin wax (and what I want you to tell me)
If you do two things before your appointment, do these: arrive with enough growth, and protect your skin barrier.
Quick prep checklist: Aim for about 1/4 inch of hair (about a grain of rice). Stop retinoids and chemical exfoliants 48 to 72 hours before. Come in with clean skin and skip heavy oils or thick creams on the chin that day.
Hair length matters more than most people realize
If the hair is too short, the wax can’t grip well. That leads to more “go over it again” moments, which can irritate your skin. If it’s extra long, you may feel the pull more. I’ll guide you if you’re not sure, but 1/4 inch is usually the sweet spot.
Tell me what’s going on with your skin right now
Let me know if you’ve had any recent peeling, a sunburn, a reaction to a new product, or if you’re using retinol or prescription skincare. I also want to know if you’re easily reactive. Chin waxing is simple, but your skin is individual. And if you’re hoping for a really clean shape, I love that. A client once said Marley “was able to sculpt” and keep things “age appropriate, ” and that kind of thoughtful shaping is the goal with facial hair removal too.
Your 5 to 10 minute chin wax, step by step (so nothing surprises you)
If you’re coming to see me in Minnetonka near Ridgedale, I keep this appointment easy and efficient. We’ll start with a quick chat, and then I’ll get to work.
1) A quick look at your growth pattern
I’ll check direction, density, and any spots that tend to miss or break. This is also where you can tell me if you’re dealing with a few coarse hairs, fuzz, or both. If you’ve tweezed recently, tell me. It helps me set expectations.
2) Cleanse and prep the skin
I’ll cleanse the area and make sure your skin is dry and ready. I work in a way that keeps you comfortable and informed, and I’m happy to talk you through it or keep it quiet. One of our waxing clients put it simply: “tess is pleasant to be around and very knowledgeable.” That’s the vibe I keep in the room, calm, confident, no awkwardness.
3) Wax application and the actual pull (the part you’re worried about)
You’ll feel a quick sting when the strip comes off. It’s brief. I work in small sections, and I’ll hold the skin properly so it feels as controlled as possible. If you need a pause, say so. If you want me to count you in, I will. If you’d rather not know when it’s coming, I can keep it smooth and quick.
“Steph is a walking master class for hair and customer care. She's always a full delight and is worth every single penny.”

4) Clean-up and a calm finish
I’ll remove any residue, check symmetry, and make sure you like the result. Most of the time you’re out the door quickly, which is exactly why people love booking a chin wax around a Ridgedale Center stop or before hopping back onto I-394.
Chin wax aftercare that actually prevents bumps (and what’s normal)
Right after a chin wax, a little redness is common. Tiny bumps can happen too, especially if your skin is reactive or you’re coming in during dry Minnesota winter air. Most people calm down within a few hours. Some take 24 to 48 hours.
For the first 24 to 48 hours
- Skip hot showers, saunas, and intense workouts. Heat can keep redness around longer.
- Avoid direct sun on the area. Fall and winter are great for facial waxing here because the sun is less intense, but skin can be drier and more sensitive.
- Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer. Keep it simple.
Starting around 72 hours
- Gently exfoliate to help prevent ingrowns. If you’re unsure what “gentle” means for your skin, ask me.
- Try not to pick or tweeze between appointments. That’s where a lot of irritation starts.
Rebooking timing depends on your growth, but many people like every 3 to 5 weeks. If you commute in from Wayzata, Hopkins, St Louis Park, Golden Valley, or Eden Prairie, a chin wax is the kind of appointment that fits easily into a busy week because it’s quick and predictable.
My “nervous first-timer” tips (the stuff I say in the room)
Here’s what I’ve learned after years of helping people feel comfortable in the chair at Bay Salon & Boutique. Small details make a big difference.
- Don’t over-prep with harsh products. Most chin wax irritation comes from skin that’s already stressed by actives or over-exfoliating.
- Tell me if you want it super quick. Some people want conversation, some want in-and-out. I match your preference.
- If you’re noticing more chin hair over time, you’re not alone. I see this a lot, and waxing is a simple way to stay looking sharp without making it a whole thing.
If you want a deeper read on the service itself, I’d also point you to what to expect from a first chin wax.
If you’re ready for a simple plan: book your chin wax, let me know what skincare you use, and I’ll keep it quick, clean, and comfortable. Chin waxing starts at $22, and it’s one of the easiest ways to feel instantly more polished.
